Attachment Parenting

When we had our first child, we treated him with affection and common sense. Now, thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Sears, this has a name: Attachment Parenting.

Affection could no more spoil a child, than the sun could be put out by a bucket of gasoline.

The Difference Between "Attachment Therapy" and "Attachment Parenting."

An article in a recent paper mentioned something called "Attachment Therapy". Which is not to be confused with Attachment Parenting.

"Attachment Therapy" is used by psychologists to treat what they call "attachment disorder". It's not based on any studies, and to anyone witnessing the "therapy" it actually looks extremely abusive.

It is a new practice, and something that goes against the grain of natural parenting.

Visit My Life as a Mom to read the full remarks.

Attachment Parenting means different things to different people.

For me, attachment parenting means, simply, allowing one's child to determine how much love and affection he or she needs.

When the baby is very young, this means cuddling him when he needs comforts. Hugs and kisses and cuddles. Lots of it. Feeding the baby when he is hungry. Not making him go hungry because of some doctor's idea of what a "schedule" should be for a baby. Rocking him to sleep. Comforting him when he has a bad dream. Singing to him. Playing with him. Breastfeeding him until he's ready to wean. Not making him sleep by himself in the dark.

Many societies practice "attachment parenting" as a normal way of parenting. Western society has moved away from this. I believe the reason for this change is historical - the wealthy landowners had nannies sleep in the children's rooms away from the parents. So when the middle class rose up out of the middle ages, they wanted to be like the lords and ladies of the manor - and put their children in separate rooms at night.

This is not the norm for much of the world. In most places, parents sleep near their children.

Along with putting our babies in separate rooms, bottlefeeding has become popular. And with this, a sort of toughness in one's attitude towards their children.

Mommies go to work, quite often, and the baby is left with a sitter.

Kids are sent to government school at the age of 4 or 5 or 6.

It's a cold world for children these days.

Attachment parenting is a way of making the world more gentle, and allowing for a more gradual transition towards independence.

And children raised this way are not "needy" or "clingy". On the contrary, my own children, and most children I know who were raised in attachment parenting households, are very independent, secure children!

April 26 Children who are so shy or so attached to their parents that they are afraid to go to school or sleep alone do much better when given a psychiatric drug, according to a major study with profound and controversial ramifications for millions of children.

Solvay Pharmaceuticals, makers of Luvox, is directly attacking attachment parenting practices, most particularly, co-sleeping.

In an attempt to sell more of the psychotropic drug, they are targeting children who arent comfortable sleeping alone as a new source of revenue.

Their "diagnosis" for children who want to sleep with mom and dad is:

"Extreme separation anxiety disorder, he said, would be displayed in a child who avoided birthday parties and sleepovers. A medium-grade example would be children who refused to sleep in their own rooms and wanted to get into bed with their parents."

Their cure of course, is to drug the children.

This presents us with several terrifying possibilities:

1.) parents who co-sleep can be found guilty of medical neglect for not medicating their mentally ill child who is suffering from separation anxiety. The punishment for medical neglect can include imprisonment and, of course, the loss of parental rights.

2.) The message that social anxiety is easily cured with drugs is all too clear.

3.) We cant forget that one of the side effects of Luvox is suicidal and homicidal ideation. How many more Columbine-type tragedies should we put up with before putting our foot down? (Yes, one of the Columbine killers was on Luvox.)

4.) The message is loud and clear: The family bed is for mentally ill people.

5.) What will they diagnose as a mental illness in children next? Will kids who suck their thumbs be singled out as mentally ill? Or kids who aren't potty trained by the age of 2? Or babies who want to nurse more than 12 months? Considering that Prozac has been manufactured in liquid form for use by babies 6 months old I wouldnt put anything past these drug companies and the FDA.

Enough is enough! If you are concerned about this issue too, please e-mail and I will send you some links.

An adult has certain rights around children which the children and modern adults rather tend to ignore. A good, stable adult with love and tolerance in his heart is about the best therapy a child can have.

The main consideration in raising children is the problem of training them without breaking them. You want to raise your child in such a way that you don’t have to control him, so that he will be in full possession of himself at all times. Upon that depends his good behavior, his health, his sanity.

Jealousy
How to Kill the Green-eyed Monster
Nothing can ruin a relationship or marriage faster than jealously. Jealousy creates anxiety, anger, loneliness, hate, fear. No one thinks clearly when jealous.

When in Doubt, Communicate!
You may remember being told as a child, "Keep quiet!" "Children should be seen, not heard," and "You talk too much." You were a "good" kid if you kept quiet. However, being quiet when you are little causes big problems later in life.

As an adult, you may have been punished for communicating.
